Susan... you know what's the most fascinating part: They were not, in any sense, hippies. They're just vagabonds at heart, world citizens before it was a catch phrase and lovers of life everywhere they find it. There was never an agenda or a political statement, it was just their way to live a quiet life and enjoy each day.

Your parents are authentic Hippies ! Cool images of your parents ( love the groovy clothes). And I want an Aunt Gypsy ! Beautiful childhood. Love all the photos and stories that go with it.
I too am blessed to have awesome parents. But they came of age before the "Peace-nik" days. My Dad was of the pocket protector, horn rimmed glasses , Space Race, rocket science era. So I grew up following the trails of the astronauts and fighter pilots. My Mom was so easygoing and never flinched about us packing up to move to the Middle East when my Dads career took us there. Now, as grandparents, they still are still the coolest people I know too !
Maybe you can get the rest of those slides and make an ebook out of your history. I would love to read it for sure!

Jeffrey... thank you for your kind words. Have the BEST time with your grandkids... sowing that adventurous life into the next generation is SUCH a gift and it will change who they are!
Jennifer -- What an extraordinary post! As a grandfather who hasn't yet gotten all the wanderlust out of his system, I'm in awe of your parents as parents and grandparents, and of you for recognizing what a gift that is -- not to mention conveying that so articulately!
I say this on the eve of my grandchildren's first visit to us in our little adventure place on the Pacific coast of Mexico. I hope they'll find a tenth of the joy and wonder of adventure you've enjoyed with your parents!

Jennifer,
You really debunked that article by CNN! I noticed from a distance how more and more of us traveling families got really p*&%$d off by this article and look how many articles have been written as a response. I really, really like that picture of your kids with their backpacks! And indeed, why should we even pack strollers as we can also carry them in slings. And that stuff on french fries...oh I can also go on and on...

Love this post, and especially the photo of backpacking kids! It's been so long since I traveled with very little kids that I couldn't remember why didn't need to pack a bunch of toys. But now I recall that it's because the talking never stopped. And yes, sometimes I wanted a break from incessant chatter, but I'm glad that I didn't cut off the flow. That's what helped build the relationship that gets us through the tough times.

Haha. Your post made me laugh!! I vividly recall one holiday when I offered the kids KFC for dinner. They were horrified! We have that at home - why can't we have holiday food?? I was highly amused and I think we actually had to cook them a BBQ before they were satisfied!!!

I really like how you wrote this from the voice of a child! It made it so much more personal, and was really great to read. The CNNGO article was so wrong - children love travelling! Well at least our boys do...
I really had to laugh about your Rule number three comment "You feed me a steady stream of that crap at home and now you’re expecting me to eat it on holiday too? Are you kidding me?! What does a kid have to do to get a BREAK around here"...yep if we feed our kids nuggets and chips then that is what they are used to...but if we let them decide to try anything and everything then that is what they will be used to!
We don't actually eat nuggest or chips with our kids, and nor do they ask for them.
We also like to go for walks - our boys are good at keeping up with us!

Liked your blog post!

Cheers
