Okay Jenn,
I'm in tears reading your lovely blog! Emerson loved the rocking and I'm sure had his dreams come even close to what you're conveying here, he'd never want to wake up
.
Its always such a treat having you and the family home, to what once was a home to generations of your family long passed. I know what you mean about having a difficult time falling asleep at Mom and Dad's. It has an air of acute energy that is hard not to feel. It doesn't lift easily or quickly; especially if you are in tune to all of the happenings that have gone on there over many generations.
We are always blessed having you at our table, and I hope Emerson will grow knowing, loving, and appreciating you as much as we all do!
Peace on your travels to come and a lot of love is heading with you over the curve of the earth.
Love you,
Rin

I love you and your family so much. Sadness mixed with excitement (and a little envy) as I watched your van dissappear on Dixie Highway. Wish I was going along with you to visit your folks. Funny how this old house brings many generations together. I will make sure your aunt Maggie makes it to Brule this year.
Hugs to everyone! Kristine

Well said! I only have to wonder if I'd had this posted on my wall twelve years ago when I became a mom if I would have heeded it. Sometimes you just have to learn it the hard way but I hope any new moms out there will keep this in mind as they feel their way through motherhood.

I'm reading this while camping in San Fran. It's just a few hours into mothers day. Next door I can hear a little girl shouting "Mum, where's my helmet?" On the other side there's screaming "mum, the dog is eating the breakfast!" and just now my 17 year old presented me with froot loops and icy cold milk in bed (tent) for mothers day!! It made me smile to read your post and hear everything going on around me!!

You brought tears to my eyes at #9. As a child I didn't get much space, so as soon as I graduated from college I took it for myself. Moving to the west coast, then onto Hungary - tomorrow we will celebrate 6 years on our homestead. The rest of my family still lives nearly next door to each other, I am glad to be the one that got away.

My advice as a child to a parent - always watch out for the quiet ones :) Thanks for such a wonderful post!

Jen- This is such a great post, and exactly what I needed to hear today! Not just because it's Mother's Day, but because I had a rough night with my tweens around bedtime and this put our little disagreement into perspective. Thank you for sharing your beautiful writing and pearls of wisdom! I hope our paths will cross on the road someday :-)

This is a beautiful post, full of so many nuggets of wisdom, Jen. Thank you. I love the bit about barefoot kids with their masks and capes and the store. :> Motherhood is not for the faint of heart. I would add to your list of parenting books the ones written by people who's kids are still under ten or by parents whose adult children have disowned them.
I remember the post you wrote about your mom last year. It was right around when we first found your blog and I remember Erik read it to me left you a comment about me that was way too sweet. We're so glad to have crossed paths with you.
Hope your mother's day is wonderful!

Ahhh...the inspirational Millers, at it again. Have I told you lately you're my heroes? Seriously, your family ROCKS! I love what you do to raise your family and live life to the fullest. And to do it and share it in such a real and down-to-earth way - that's what makes you inspirational. The down side of not having you in the Commonweath is more than made up for by the anticipation of gobbling up more vicarious experiences through your blog. Give everyone our best. Safe travels and we"ll catch you somewhere in the world soon!

Ps - We just went to the Wake Up The Earth festival this weekend and thought of all of you from last year...:)

This all sounds quite familiar--including life in Indiana. I grew up in Martinsville and still have 2 brothers living there, another in Plainfield, and my parents in Marion.

And I certainly am familiar with the experience of swatting masquitos on the campground while the glow of my laptop attracts every single one of those things within 20 miles. Oh, such a romantic life isn't it! In good times and bad, Monica & I always say, "this is the life we chose."
