30 Days of Indie Travel: Worst Experience
April 8, 2014 in Travelogue
Boots-n-All is hosting a fun project this month: 30 Days of Indie Travel Art Project.
Of course I set out with great intentions of doing all 30 days. Needless to say, Day 8 is my first attempt.
Today’s prompt: Worst Experience.
I spent the afternoon’s walk thinking about that. What’s the worst thing that’s happened to us on the road?
I have to say, that after six years of travel on five continents… we haven’t had anything go terribly awry. Certainly nothing I’d consider a crisis. Of course that doesn’t mean that everything has gone well. Oh no. Not hardly.
There was the time Ezra had a “personal problem” on a chicken bus in Guatemala.
Or when we ran for our lives, leaving Bali… yeah, that sucked, and it was all my fault.
Then there was that day in central Mexico that was a kaleidoscope of vomit, a dead bloated donkey, rain and no place to stay.
Oh, let’s not forget the day our stuff got stolen in Vietnam and the computers went down at the border, with half of us in and half of us checked out of the country.
Or the day Ezra got busted for smuggling entering New Zealand. He’ll need therapy for that. Or I will.
Or what felt like a close call on the border of Honduras. Turns out our timing was perfect.
Our last 24 hours in Mexico, with the guys between us and the kids with AK-47s was a “worst” moment that turned out fine.
Jakarta is, without question, the worst place we’ve ever been.
The day I rolled in bat… feces… and then had to get naked and shower in the jungle was a personal “worst.”
We’ve had a few medical emergencies, nothing life and death. We’ve had card info stolen and the bank rodeo that goes with that. We’ve been sick. We’ve been sold up river a million times, once quite literally, in Laos. Stuff happens. All in all, we consider ourselves quite lucky.
What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you on the road?
For some reasons it was the lemon story that got me… I could FEEL your stress coming through the screen at me lol Going through customs is always stressful to me – you never know what to expect, if they’ll be understanding if you make a mistake, or if they’ll assume the worst of you and give you a hard time. Glad you guys got through though!
I am late responding to this, but Sheralyn’s reply reminded me of our time in Big Bend National Park in Texas when we were stopped and searched in a very rough and rude manner by 3 guys (in uniform so they were in the right of course!) believing that we were either carrying drugs or people. It was intimidating, annoying, scary and humiliating. As you know it is very near the Mexican border. Say no more…
[…] a lighter note, @edventuremama says, “We haven’t had anything go terribly awry. Certainly nothing I’d consider a crisis.” Then she goes on to post links to some hilarious stories of mishaps, like the time they had […]
