Snorkeling Trip, Nai Yang: A Photo Essay
November 11, 2012 in Asia, Snorkeling, Thailand, Travelogue
I learned to snorkel in the Sea of Cortez the winter I was eight.
My first attempt included becoming terrified of a sting ray, screaming my head off through my snorkel and raking my mother against a huge (sharp) head of coral in my attempt to mount her like a dolphin and get the heck out of dodge.
I don’t think I’ll ever get over the guilt I felt when she cried hard as my Dad poured ammonia over the huge weeping wound to keep it from getting infected.
Today we had the privilege of watching two little friends snorkel for the first time, well, only one of them actually snorkeled, the other paddled around on his board and looked at the fish from the dry side of the surface. It was so much fun to remember what that “first” is like, when the whole under water world opens up for the very first time.
The reef here is mostly dead.
This makes me sad.
We did, however see LOTS of fish and we saw our first really big squid, as long as my arm, and of a different sort than the little ones we’ve seen in the southern Atlantic.
There was also some fishing and leaping off of boats to be had. It was a good day.
Such beautiful pictures! Thanks for sharing your day with us and finding all those treasures for my boys!
What great photos!
They’re cuttle fish! I’ve only ever seen one, down south of Sydney you were lucky!,We were out on the Great Barrier Reef last week, snorkeling with the kids, they finally got the hang of it and loved every second ( 8 and 6 now) but our first attempts were very similar to yours! Lovely photos, I’m a big fan of anything marine!
Gorgeous pictures. I was wondering what type of underwater camera you use? I think Santa might be dropping one off for us this year.
Sonja… our camera isn’t a fancy one, it’s the “Olympus Tough” camera that is waterproof to ten meters and shock proof… it’s Gabe’s. There are better ones, but for the money, we’re happy with it! 🙂
thank you, thank you! That’s exactly what we’re looking for. Tough and cheap! You can’t travel with anything that you aren’t too upset about loosing. I was just amazed at how well you’re underwater pictures turned out. We did some snorkeling in Australia (Heron Island to be exact) and I bought a few of those disposable underwater cameras. What a HUGE waste of money and frustration! We’re doing our RTW trip at the end of 2013 and I think a better version of the disposables is in order. I’d love to buy something in time for our ‘get your feet wet’ central America trip in March.
Can I just add, Sonja, that we bought 2 x $25 underwater cameras for the kids from a well known Australian supermarket beginning with C and they are superb! They use them for all their photos and they just took them out on the reef They’re Kodak.

Alyson… are they one time use, or digital? They must be one time use for that cost…
No, they’re not, digital, they had them on special for months, I saw them on the internet for $99. If you go to my worldtravelfamily facebook page I just stuck a photo on of me with the camera in my hand, you can just about see it. Kodak Easy Share
