Tana Toraja’s Bamboo Orchestra
January 22, 2013 in Asia, Indonesia, Travelogue
We took some video for you the other day, of some fantastic kids with a unique musical talent.
They play bamboo pipes!
These children, 30 of them, live together with a smiling older man who is their community leader, their father and a wonderful music teacher. They are orphans from the villages around Rantepao and this man does his best to ensure that they grow up safe, and healthy and complete their educations. Part of how they support themselves is by playing music for folks who are interested enough to stop. Of course, with our musical kids, we were more than interested.
Our one regret? That we didn’t have our instruments in the van to play for them a little bit too!!
We hung out with kids in their dorm, and of course they wanted to take some pictures…
What a great show. Such talented, beautiful young people.
Been there last summer…wonderful people and music. Did they gave you some bank code to send them money?i can’t find mine anymore, and I would like to make donations..if you have please help. Thanks!Giulia
Giulia… no… they did not… I wish I had that to share with you!
Thanks anyway…wonderful experience…we almost did the same trip in Tana Toraja…unforgettable people!
The video is from Australia instead of the orchestra.
Thanks Mary Ellen!! There was a setting I’d missed. It’s fixed now!
What a treat!
