Yes, We ARE Crazy, Thanks For Noticing!

August 11, 2011 in North America, Travelogue, United States

The sun is just peeking over the treetops and the only sound in the camper is heavy breathing; everyone is still asleep.

If you’re wondering why there’s been “radio silence” for the past while it’s because we’ve had a full camper: 7 inside this morning… four more out in the tent.  Friends we met cycling in the Czech a few years ago. Last week, friends from Guatemala, the Dandenau Family. Next week, our buddy Chris (also from Guatemala, he played a few gigs with Hannah) and some new traveling friends we haven’t met in person yet.

Instead of writing, I’ve been cooking!

In, out and around the revolving door of laughter and loved ones we’ve made a quick road trip to PA to send Gabriel off to the midwest. He’s working an internship in Indiana, at Good Life Farm, learning about hydroponic lettuce production, sheep raising and the realities of field work. He’s been gone five days and we’ve gotten two very excited phone calls. Hannah leaves Monday with our current set of visitors to spend a s week in PA with her girlfriends; part of her birthday gift.

It’s weird and wonderful to have teenagers big enough to strike out on their own adventures and follow their own paths. I love it, even though I have to do their dishes while they’re gone!

The big excitement around here (and the big reason for radio silence) is the impending launch of The Mama Bus. In 19 short days I’m blasting off in a 15 passenger van with my good friend Lois and her 7 kids for a cross-continental drive.

Why yes, we ARE crazy, thanks for noticing! Isn’t that why you read this blog?

The plans have been in the works for several months, but the serious work began June 1 and has rolled full steam ahead since then.

It’s a pretty amazing story, actually:

  • 2 Mamas & 11 kids make a cross-country journey without the Daddies (someone has to work!)
  • BUT, they don’t take any of the money for the trip out of the family budget!
  • Instead, we’ve raised the money for the trip quite creatively.
  • We’re doing the entire trip fast food free.
  • We’re making mini-documentaries.
  • It’s all about education.
  • We’re sharing it all with our followers on our website.

Please check out our website and follow along, as all of the Edventure Project action will be happening over there for the next few months! I’ll post the updates here too, but there will be MORE on The Mama Bus.

I know there are more than a few folks who follow us precisely because they want to do something crazy and outside of the box too. The Mama Bus project is an excellent exercise in “making it happen” on a relatively small scale (a two month trip).

If you’re on the list of dreamers, or pre-launch doers, head over and make an account. I dare you to come away anything but inspired by the kids and their commitment to their dream. If they can do it, YOU can do it.
